FACTS AND FALLACIES OF EVERYDAY THINGS THAT ROBROB8 THINKS YOU SHOULD KNOW

Q: Did you ever wonder why the M & M's© people are choosing new colors for their candies?

A: Known to most people, M & M's© are round pieces of chocolate (or peanuts) that are candy coated.

Have you ever wondered why they are all different colors?

In many places throughout the world, health authorities closely monitor the consumption of certain artificial flavorings and colorings. The main exterior ingredient of an M & M candy (chocolate or peanut) is "tartrazine", a containing-color additive.

The reason the M & M's© people (The Mars© company) are trying new colors is to use the public as a wholesale test force of the attractiveness of new colors and the lessening of possible toxicity levels of the color additive currently being used. Tartrazine doesn't effectively shine for the colors purple, pink and aqua. Therefore the new colors will possibly be less toxic. They learned their lesson once, in the 1970's, having to remove the red M & M© from production. (news)

Don't believe me? Check out this excerpt from the M & M© website:

The History of M & M's® ?
In 1960, "M&M's"® Peanut Chocolate Candies added three new colors to the mix: red, green and yellow were added to the original brown color. In 1972, the first appearance of the "M&M's"® Brand Characters on packaging reinforced brand awareness, as the characters became increasingly known through print and TV advertising. In 1976, the color orange was added to the "M&M's"® Peanut Chocolate Candies color mix. That same year, Red "M&M's"® Chocolate Candies were removed from the traditional color blend due to public controversy surrounding a specific red food coloring. This red coloring was not used in "M&M's"® Chocolate Candies. However, in order to avoid consumer confusion the red candy was pulled from the color mix.
