Morpheus, Napster, Grokster, Audio Galaxy are all great ways to share files and download music, movies and other files. But who wants the "spyware that's included with them?

(Install P2P Client Grokster without the spyware)

Not I and not you, certainly. Who wants what they read online changed by a third-party program that you didn't even know you installed? Not Robrob8 and hopefully not you either! I am getting together a list of things you need to keep your system safe and running anonymously: this is just a start, so be patient with me. For the most part it's a list of links to stuff I find (I don't pass off other's work as mine!). I do have stuff like changing Windows Sounds and a page of links to stuff you need like WinZip and free Anti-virus programs and media players, so here is more:

April 25 2002 - New XP Powertoys have been released. Check them out at the Official XP Site!

Did you want to drive everyone crazy with your own personalized boot-up screen? Get rid of what B.G. wants you to see and in a few short steps you can create your own WindowsXP boot-up screen! Here's how to do it!

Did you know that WindowsXP comes with a built-in firewall? No longer do you need to download any free firewalls, like Zone Alarm, you already have one! It is not "on" by default, so to set it up follow this:
GO TO: Start> Control Panel> and open Network Connections, by double-clicking on the icon. Then Right-click on the new icon that appears in the Network Connections box and select "properties" in the pop-up menu. Then click on the "Advanced" tab and put a check mark in the box for your Internet Connection Firewall so that you have enabled your Microsoft Windows XP Firewall. You should know that you should only use this if you are using a DSL or Cable modem or some other type of "Always-On" Internet connection. If you are using a 56Kb dial-up modem you should 1: not worry about a firewall and 2: get the heck off my site, you need high speed to best benefit from my stuff.

Did you know that the default value for bandwidth settings in Windows XP reserves 20% for unknown uses? You can easily edit this "General Properties" setting and regain that 20%!! Go to START > RUN: and type in "gpedit.msc" (without the quotation marks, of course!) and follow the path with the image below. This modification can only be accomplished if you have installed the Windows XP Professional OS - the Home edition does not allow for this change to be made!

DO THIS FOR REAL FUN/DANGER: go to: file:///C:/WINDOWS/INF/sysoc.inf - with the knowledge found in this file you can change the visibility of all the programs that can and cannot be installed/uninstalled from your Windows XP. Want to lose WORDPAD? this is where you can make it happen.... Want to make sure that the kids can NEVER uninstall your programs/games/whatever? Take care of that at this file setup for all programs that are listed... be sure to make a backup copy of the sysoc.inf file first... a little knowledge can make or break a functioning computer. The way that it works is this: the values for every program are either set to HIDE or they are not. "HIDE" means that the install/uninstall option does not appear in the CONTROL PANEL ADD/REMOVE applet choices. If you want to uninstall the program, just delete the HIDE, leaving two commas side by side - ,, - If you want a program to be 'uninstallable' just add the HIDE in the middle of the two commas - ,HIDE, - like that. For instance:
Pinball=ocgen.dll,OcEntry,pinball.inf,HIDE,7 - hidden program cannot be uninstalled
Pinball=ocgen.dll,OcEntry,pinball.inf,,7 - program is now unhidden, or visible, and can be uninstalled.
Use the preceding info at your own risk!

DO THIS: go to START>RUN and type in "msconfig" [no quotes, ok bonehead?] - and click OK. Here you will find the "System Configuration Utility" so you can add and subtract programs from your startup and so much more... Don't mess with this unless you know what you're doing.

LIFE WITH XP CONTINUES - from here on, I'll be adding tips for Windows XP as I find them... mostly so that, if I write them down here I can throw away the little bit of paper that they're written on... geesh, my desk is a MESS!

OCTOBER 11 2001 - I was smarter with this latest upgrade of the Windows operating system. I installed a new Maxtor Hard Drive, made it the primary drive, while keeping the old drive installed as a slave, and installed XP there. This way I saved the possible heartache of losing all my information and saved data, like the infamous crash of ME. That one cost me more than a year's worth of data and work that hadn't been backed up. YES! I've since learned my lesson, so no need to email me and tell me how stupid I was. Thanks anyways. I have a CD-Burner now and back everything on disk. I have lost use of my Logitech QuickCam Web Camera, but I hope that it will soon be available for use. On the Logitech web site they say that it is XP compatible, but all that happens is my system now gets locked up when the cam is active, so I have my doubts. Otherwise the install was rather effortless and painless. I am still getting used to the new features (Don't install a firewall if you are going to use the new Windows XP built-in firewall... it took me 45 minutes to figure out that the free Zone Alarm and the native Windows XP firewall don't work together and end all possible internet connections. Don't ask how I ended up with 2 firewalls running. Longer story.) I do like the built-in CD burning software, very easy to use. And I'm working on the voice recognition software, slowly. If you have any XP tips, send me an email. More tips coming soon. Of this I am sure.
