About Pringles Potato Chips

Q: Did you ever wonder what Pringles potato chips were made of?

A: Known to most people, Pringles potato chips are
made from dehydrated and flaked potatoes. Unknown to most is the source
of these potato flakes.

Have you ever wondered what McDonald’s does with their left-over french fries?

In most areas of the world local health regulations require that food cannot
sit under a heat lamp for more than 16 minutes before it is deemed inconsumable
by the public. It is at this time interval that one of the largest
suppliers of fast food for the world supplies one of the largest
manufacturers of potato chips their base ingredient. McDonald’s carefully
collects unserved french fries and places them into specially created
dehydrators. The remains are then flaked and placed into airtight
containers which are then shipped to Pringles factories all over the
world.

Don’t believe me? Check out this excerpt from the Pringles website:

How are Pringles made?
We’re glad you noticed that Pringles are shaped differently and taste different. While Pringles contain the same basic ingredients found in other chip products, we take a totally radical approach to the way we mix our ingredients. We buy potatoes in the form of potato flakes and then add just enough water and other wholesome ingredients to make a smooth potato dough. The dough is cut in uniform shapes and these cut-outs are placed on pre-formed and Pringles-shaped carriers. The crisps are quick-fried and seasoned just right. Finally, they go to the stack-packer and then on to your favorite store.

Follow-up

The people at Pringles have written
Robrob8 an email (July 11 2001) expressing their concern in having the
truth made known about the manufacture of their potato chips. You can read
it below.

ABC News followed up this story (or rather copied it from my site) on July 6 2008 on this page.

They have since changed their news report but thanks to BART, I have below a screenshot of the story:

Pringles Responds

This is the email, in full and unedited, received July 11 2001.

Hello, Rob.

I work in P&G Consumer Relations and have responsibility for the people who
answer email messages about P&G products. I’m writing to ask for your help.
Recently, a consumer got in touch to let us know about your “Did you ever wonder
what Pringles potato chips were made of?” article. While she understood the
article was written in fun, it had been passed to her by people who may not have
been as sure.

I checked out your site and think you have a great thing going — lots of clever
“tongue-in-cheek” postings. I enjoyed your outrageous claim that ingredients
for Pringles come from a famous maker of french-fries. However, there are
enough facts mixed into many of your articles that we feel people may not fully
understand the Pringles article is a spoof.

I’m sure you can appreciate how important it is for us to create and maintain
trust in our products. We want the people who buy Pringles to be confident
that only fresh raw materials are used to make the dehydrated potato flake
ingredient. Since there are indications that your article may be misinterpreted as factual, we respectfully request that you remove it from your
site or clearly indicate that it is a spoof.

Thanks for your time. Wishing you success with your site!

Final Statement by Robrob8

I hope that
such a big company, that probably makes more than US$100,000,000.00 a year
(maybe even more than a billion dollars a year!) decides to NOT go after
poor little Robrob8 for merely passing along a story that he was told
when he was little. Maybe they want Uncle John’s address and they can go
after him instead. After all, he started it!

But, you
never know how Urban
Legends
start, do you? For my part, this topic ends right here. I
don’t need another problem, do I?

How Do I Email A Prank?

Sorry, there are too many email programs for me to
give you an exact answer, you’ll just have to do some reading about the
program or service that you are using. I can tell you that you will send
it as an ATTACHMENT, so start your learning looking for "How to send
an attachment." in the HELP section of your email program or service
provider. Good Luck!

When I scan a prank I
downloaded or when I run it, I get a virus warning, why?

Most pranks that you download from Robrob8.com
will NOT show up as a virus, but a couple of them will. The reason is that
they are a JOKE program that causes an unexpected result, usually a fake
format of your system, or shutting down Windows. The virus warning always
starts with "JOKE_" to let you know that it is just a JOKE,
not a real virus
. Your virus software help files and documentation
will have more information about this warning. Read it.
Do not email me about these warnings. I already know what they are and
I certainly would not be responsible for infecting anyone’s computer with
a harmful virus. Remember, I virus check every download AND I run them on
my own system before posting them here!

What is a ZIP file ?

A ZIP file is a compression format (filename.zip)
that packs the prank or other downloadable file into a smaller package so
it is faster to download. All files here are ZIPPED so they are faster to
download and easier for you to run your own virus scan on them, if you
wish. I recommend that you use WinZip (it has a free trial) software,
you can find out how to get it from the Download
Help page.
Zip and Exe (executable) files are shown using the different icons below
when viewed in the Explorer View of "My Computer" or
"Windows Explorer"

As far as I know, all Zipped (Compressed) files
will be seen with the Zip icon, Exe (executable) files will either be
shown with the unpacking box or an icon that the program creator has made
specifically for the program. But this can vary with the software program
used.

Can I submit a prank or other program?

Yes you can. Follow these steps explicitly

  • Email me that you are going to be
sending me a prank or other file. Include the file details, such as
size and what it does. Include your name, email address and phone
number. Do not send it with this email.

  • When I have received the first
email, I will reply. When you receive my reply, again use your reply
feature and attach the file you want to send. The file MUST be in ZIP
format! You must keep the reply email intact!

  • I will quarantine and virus check
the file. I may submit it for review to McAfee if I am suspicious of
    it.

  • If and when the file passes all
available tests, it will be reviewed and added to the most appropriate
category. I will give you credit for sending me the file if you wish.

  • I do not purchase pranks or other programs for distribution here, but with credit being given to you as
the creator or finder of the file, you will gain fame.

Why does my browser show "javascript errors"?

Unfortunately, Netscape and Internet Explorer work differently in reading the HTML (web page code) that I am using. To see the Robrob8 site with all the effects that I am using,
you’ll have to use Internet Explorer 4 or newer. I am working at the Netscape
version of the web page code, but it takes longer, thus the error messages
at the bottom of your browser window. Please bear with me!

How do I take a screenshot??

You already have all the
tools you’ll need, here’s a step-by-step guide. A screenshot is what you
need to have your picture of your screen sent in to Robrob8. Now, a lot
of people will tell you that you need X program to do this, spend mucho
$$$ , and who knows what else…. but I have a better way. Something
that’s free for you and easy for me.
First, I want you to closely look at your keyboard. Look for the PRINT
SCREEN key. It’s usually somewhere near the top right. It may say on it
PRTSCN or something very similar. Once you’ve found it, look at the next
step photo below.

help_screenshot1

Once you’ve found it, pat
yourself on the back. You’ve discovered a basic graphic editing program that 75%
of computer users don’t know they own. Weird, eh? The only thing you really need
to know from this point is how to PASTE your PRTSCN screenshot into PAINT so you
can save the image and email it to me. Follow the steps in the image below to
save the screenshot.

help_screenshot3

Step 1 – While playing your
game press the PRTSCN (Print Screen) key.

Step 2 – Open PAINT as shown
above in the first picture then PASTE it as shown in the second picture.

Step 3 – Paste it, then go
under the FILE menu and save it. Preferably use your own name as the file name
you save the picture with.

Step 4 – Use your email program
to send it to me as an ATTACHMENT – robrob8@[no-spam]robrob8.com "remove the
no-spam" -. I’ll do the rest. If you need help with ATTACHMENTS, please don’t
email me. Use the HELP feature in your email program. Honestly, I’d help you if
I could but there are SO MANY email programs that I really can’t help you. BE
SURE to include your name, your game, your score and five hundred dollars….,
well, if you include in your message a nice thought about Robrob8.com you can
skip paying me $500.00. BUT only if you include that in your message.
